Whether tackling a full-scale newbuild or a periodic refurbishment AD Associates can demonstrate our historic and most recent projects as both lead architect and supporting roles. Chris and David have been instrumental in the design & delivery of numerous cruise, river and yacht vessels, from Crystal Cruises Esprit & Mozart, refurbishments for Star Cruises & NCL, to prestigious vessels such as P&O Cruises, Britannia and Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth.
Our most recent projects are described in a little more detail below.
We are working with Saga Cruises on their new ship, Spirit of Adventure; the sister vessel to the Spirit of Discovery. We are providing a comprehensive architectural design service to Saga, including overall design direction and project support, up until the vessel’s delivery. AD is involved in numerous spaces onboard including public, speciality dining, forwards suites and guest cabins.
Spirit of Adventure will possess a distinctive personality; confident and bold, offering a new, fresh and boutique style to the cruise market. Following the notion that saga guests are looking for aspirational interiors with personality that offer a relaxed and luxurious backdrop to fantastic and unrivalled service; the interiors will embody the best of British contemporary design.
The approach is bold and adventurous, eclectic, and with carefully curated use of colour, offering variation, big scale patterns and a layered palette.’ Saga Cruises, Spirit of Adventure is due for delivery in the summer of 2020.
The new Crystal Endeavor is well on its way to launching the brand’s luxury expedition program in 2020, with numerous designs overseen by AD Associates. Following the successful delivery of detailed technical design packages and specifications, the construction phase is now underway on Crystal Endeavor. We continue to support the process right through to delivery. We came aboard the expedition project in its infancy to undertake initial space planning and the GA development, helping map out the sizes of public rooms, cabin modules and more. Each space naturally has it’s own distinct design, and the key was to ensure it didn’t jar when you travelled from space to space, but has a fluidity and longevity.
AD has played a major role in the ship’s entertainment spaces, dining and public areas, including the development of Waterside, and an interior promenade. Nobu will also make an appearance on Crystal Endeavor, and we worked closely with Nobu’s designers to translate the Japanese-Peruvian fusion experience to the expedition vessel.
Entering service in 2017, with a further two vessels of the same class a year later, Crystal Bach and Mahler represent the first newbuild river vessels for Crystal.
Representing as lead from the outset and as the sole designer during the construction and delivery phase, AD Associates has been instrumental in the initial concept / R&D of the vessels, working closely with Naval Architects and specialists alike to optimise the design.
Throughout AD Associates have provided a vast array of services, from weight and budgetary analysis, brand presentations to site supervision, mock-up and acceptance tests. We proudly await the vessels delivery to complete dressing out and quality assurance reviews.
Crystal’s entry into the river cruise market heralded the arrival of Crystal Mozart and a significant project for AD Associates to play a pivotal role in the expansion of the brand.
Working closely with Crystal Executives and operational specialists alike, AD Associates had a strong collaborative presence from the very beginning, attending site visits and developing the project’s brief. With a challenging eight months between purchase and delivery, AD Associates demonstrated their ability to work within tight timescales, leading throughout the process from concept, design, and delivery, not just on the interiors but exterior styling and vessel livery too.
Crystal Cruises decided to re-imagine their ocean-going vessels, as part of it’s “Evolution of Crystal Luxury”. The month-long dry dock redesign marks the most expansive makeover in Crystal Symphony’s history and we were involved throughout the project.
We transformed what was once a pool deck with a retractable glazed roof, into a welcoming daytime and evening venue. The existing Trident Grill and Gelato were joined by the newly created Silk Kitchen & Bar. The successful layering of the space is an important part of AD Associates’ approach and having control over such things as artwork and signage, as well as forging close partnerships with lighting specialists and the careful integration of entertainment equipment, ensures we created a space that was thoughtful, well integrated and enjoyable to be in.
Elsewhere, the former Crystal Dining Room has emerged as Waterside, where AD Associates reflected the chic décor and sophisticated ambiance found in the restaurants of the same name aboard Crystal River Cruises (also AD Associates designed).
Following in the footsteps of her sister-vessels makeover in 2017, Crystal Serenity underwent her most extensive refurbishment ever in October 2018. The near 4-week period saw AD Associates contribute to the reimaging of several of the vessels signature dining and public spaces.
The Stardust Club has been carefully refreshed, resulting in a sumptuous and atmospheric venue, which now supports a new ‘supper club’ dining concept. Staying true to Palm Court’s elegant identity whilst also transcending the space in line with Crystal Cruises vision of contemporary luxury, this venue underwent the most significant transformation. Relocation of the stage, offering an “in-the-round” entertainment concept, released space for a dedicated food and beverage offering; of fresh leaf teas and pastries affording the most elegant of afternoon tea experiences.
Elsewhere, the revitalised Crystal Dining Room became Waterside. The space is contemporised with clean lines, divided by attractive feature screens and a bold new chandelier. Reimaging Tastes into The Silk Kitchen & Bar saw a completely soft refurbishment that was Asian inspired with an elegant alfresco feel making for a bright yet intimate atmosphere.
